“Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.”
Eckhart Tolle, book - The Power of Now
Why do some people enjoy a particular task while others dread even thinking about it? It's a good question. Do you find yourself constantly doing things you don't enjoy? But still do not have the choice to make a positive change? Here are a few little tricks you can develop to find satisfaction in the most dreary of tasks.
I.
When you find yourself struggling with the aspects of life or work, reflect on the reasons behind your actions. Consider the question, what am I doing, and why am I doing this? We all experience frustration over the jobs we are given or the tasks that land in our lap. Yet, others take these circumstances in stride. There exists a profound purpose driving our engagement in these pursuits. The motivation to rise each day. There is purpose in what you are doing, and it's great to sit back, take a breath, and reflect on the why. Reflect on the personal reasons you hold dear to yourself.
II.
If there are tasks within your profession or in your general life that you hate doing, try to get through those tasks first. Finish the things you dislike right away, and do not move on until completion. You could learn to enjoy the satisfaction of the accomplishment. We've all done it. You've conquered what you dread doing and have freed yourself from it. It feels great.
III.
If the task or activity is with a group, focus on enjoying the social interactions with the people around you. Yes, some jobs or long study sessions are exhausting and rob you of quality time, but doing it with a group can take the edge off. Begin by looking for ways to have fun with the ones around you while completing the task at hand.
IIII.
Last on the list is a great method for how you travel through life, and one that suits this article and many others on this site, quieting the constant dialog and daydreaming within your mind. It is far more desirable to turn to escapism while doing the things you do not enjoy, but the real joy comes from within, and from this the realization of being alive. Calm your mind and focus on the world around you, even when doing tasks you dread. Focus on your breath, the sights, and colors around you, the smell in the air, there is so much of life you shut out when focusing on the negative. Challenge yourself to calm that inner dialog. It's not easy, but in the long run will give you great rewards. Being to give all of your attention and focus to each task. This may seem counterintuitive, but this could slowly wash away the negative aspects we cling on to.
