Three quick hacks to shift your mood

Three quick hacks to shift your mood

Daniel MacDougall

“If you want happiness for an hour—take a nap. If you want happiness for a day—go fishing. If you want happiness for a year—inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime—help someone else.” —Chinese Proverb

Three quick ideas to change your mood and add an extra boost to your life.

I.

Exercise is the first and one of the easiest to recommend. It doesn't even have to be a sweat-dripping workout; although there are massive positives to improving your mood with high intensity, there is plenty of benefits to just getting outside and going for a walk. Type in - improve your mood - in any search bar, getting outside or going for a walk keeps coming up. There's a good reason for this. It works. Next time something is bugging you, get on your feet and see what happens. Simple steps can make big changes.

II.

Take some time to look through old photographs. This one is personal to me. Pictures of happy times past show me there will be happy times in the future. Family, friends, and the places I have been are a great indicator I can go there again, and I will, and so can you. Take some time to go back and realize what is important to you.

III.

The third tip is to listen to music you enjoy. A study published in the National Library of Medicine explained the positive effects of listening to music and dopamine. "Listening to the music you love will make your brain release more dopamine, a crucial neurotransmitter for humans' emotional and cognitive functioning (1)." So the next time you are in a shabby mood, don't be afraid to crank the music up.
