Is There A Road Map to Life

Daniel MacDougall

Is there a road map to life? The short answer is no; the long answer is maybe, but quite grey in many areas. It should be. Not the answer you are looking for, but an honest one. Your life is not a standard textbook; rather, it's a complex mess of emotions and decisions. Difficult conundrums fall into your lap daily. In this article, we provide a few quick pointers to your road map of life. Be sure to subscribe for more on this topic.

I.

Work on forming a strong moral compass. Your moral compass aids you in your life's travels. Making the right decision will become easier if you have a foundation to judge what life throws at you. Morals are a code of ethics for oneself. You have standards, and sometimes they need to be tweaked. So, how does one build a strong moral compass?

  • Humility: Avoid being arrogant and boasting about yourself all the time. Typically, no one cares. Also, refrain from watching content where creators boast and brag. For more on humility read here.

  • Accountability: Take responsibility for your actions and situation in life. Everything around you is a manifestation of your life. Own what you have, even if you don't like it.

  • Honesty: Be honest with yourself and others around you. Stop lying and spinning false truths to your advantage. If your life is built on a framework of honesty, it will stop you from acting out your lies.

  • Selflessness: Be quick to help others. Look to help others in the world around you. You may not feel that important, but begin to help others and see the impact you have on the world. The world needs you.

II.

Develop a Mindset of Self-discovery. Does anyone know who they are? It's a great question, and no one has an answer to satisfy the masses. Typically, when there is no one-size-fits-all answer, the truth lies within. No one can tell you who you are. People close to you may have a well-formed idea, but you are far too complex, and the only real captain of your ship is you. Here are a few places to get started on your path to Self-discovery.

  • Explore what excites you. Do you find yourself daydreaming about what you want to be doing? Well, go do it. Focus on activities that excite you. Things you've never tried before.

  • Practice a form of meditation. To learn the answers from within, you need to calm your mind. Start with a basic form of meditation to see which best suits you. Mindfulness and focused breath meditation practices are great places to start.

III.

Education and skill development play a significant role in forming a road map to life. Immersing yourself in the world requires you to learn and form an understanding. The more you learn, the more you grow and develop. How can you build a proper road map to life if you know nothing of the world you are in? If you're currently a student, start by taking your learning objectives seriously. If you're middle-aged or older, begin by taking up new hobbies and broadening your interests.

  • Purchase books on topics you don't usually read.

  • Take on tasks at work that are out of your comfort zone.

  • Take up a hobby you've always wanted, but aim for an activity that provides value and personal development.

  • If you don't have the tools or skills for a new hobby, try joining a club. It's a great way to meet new people and share interests.

IV.

And last but most important, take on responsibility. Have you been playing the role of a Peter Pan type in your life? Your time spent in Neverland, a place where you never have to grow up or take on responsibility. It sounds nice, and to frequent that mindset from time to time is okay, but have you surrounded yourself with games and distractions? Unfortunately, this type of lifestyle can be an enforcer of the decaying human psyche. People who do not lift a load in their lives find themselves lost and easily persuaded, typically by negative aspects. A sled dog needs to pull a sled. A human needs responsibility to help give life meaning. There is no meaning when you spend your time finger-flicking images on your phone or staring off into space out of boredom. Look for meaning in your life. What has meaning to you and only you? Take responsibility for that meaning and seek it.

Try something new this week. It doesn't have to be anything grand, something entirely new to you. Write down what you learned and if it was positive for you. Then work on the next experience. Learning can be defined by experiences. Go try something new.
