"Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues."
- Confucius
Is it possible to cultivate a sense of humility without feeling life's harsh lessons? Have you ever looked back only to realize your ego took control of your intentions, leaving that lingering sense of guilt? We all have. Everyone has that intuitive feeling guiding us to proper actions and choices, but how do we make it grow, and how do we use humility to make us stronger? There are ways to nurture humility within ourselves, allowing us to learn from mistakes and place our pride on the shelve. Here are a few techniques to quiet the ego.
I.
Practicing introspection is a great technique. Dedicate a time of silence to focus on self-reflection, a practice that can be challenging in a world of phones and screens. Yet, near the end of your day, set aside a few moments to review your daily experiences. Many of us go through life without self-examination. Self-reflection entails a deep dive into your thoughts, emotions, motivations, what you said, and how you behaved throughout the day. Analyze your life on the micro and macro levels. Do not judge or scrutinize during this process. Simply sit back, relax, and reflect. Explore alternate actions on how you behaved. Find time within your life to push that metal pause button and look within. Over time, the results can be outstanding.
II.
Learn to cultivate empathy to put aside one's ego and foster positive humility. Empathy is the adhesive binding society together. Without it, the desires and needs of others slip through the cracks. Recognize that everyone has their own wants and needs, and understanding this can foster a better understanding of ourselves. Strive to see the viewpoints of others. Actively listen to understand others before attempting to make yourself understood. This practice will help you understand the world through the eyes of others, thus giving you a better comprehension of the world surrounding you.
III.
Embracing a growth mindset is a valuable strategy in life. Abilities and intelligence are not immutable but can be developed and nurtured over time. We don't always succeed or excel at certain tasks, yet pretending to be proficient for a short while is acceptable. However, do not be disheartened when things go unplanned or others lose confidence in you. Skills and capabilities develop through time and practice, and it's perfectly acceptable to communicate your areas of progress. These are not your weak points but areas that require work and nurture. Demonstrating the motivation to learn can be a powerful asset. Individuals with growth mindsets generally achieve more and lead healthier lifestyles when compared to those constrained by rigid beliefs.
